Online Backup – Mozy vs. Crashplan

September 23rd, 2009 2 comments

A good backup strategy is important, especially if you have personal or business data on your computer, like photos, videos or other documents, that can’t simply be downloaded from the internet again. Files that are accidently deleted, overwritten, or infected by a virus can be easily restored.

There are many possibilities for backing up data like external hard drives, dvds, network computers. In this article I want to show you two online backup services, that I tried. The great advantage of online backup is the safety of your data, even in case of a fire in your house. The greatest disadvantage is the limited data transfer rate to the internet.

Now for something personal again, music to be exact. “Die Apokalyptischen Reiter” is a great german metal band, that I want to show you briefly. I have to admit, that I only recently got to know them, but I instantly loved them. Also seeing them live was a great experience.

Here is a song for getting to know them, Eruption:

Since a few weeks, the Riders use Twitter (@reitermania), there you get peeks on the currently running Paganfest tour, where they tour europe togehter with some other bands.

Internet Explorer 6 in Windows 7 XP Mode

September 15th, 2009 No comments

I recently switched over to Windows 7 on my desktop computer, and I really like it. One especially useful feature is the XP Mode. It is a virtual Windows XP based on Microsoft VirtualPC. The Applications of the virtual computer are listed in the start menu of Windows 7 and can be integrated directly in the Windows 7 desktop.

One way I use this feature is webdesign. On a regular basis, I have to check websites for IE6 compatibility, which is unfortunately still in use on some compuers. As IE6 is already installed in the virtual XP installation, there is no shortcut to it in the Windows 7 start menu. This can be fixed quite easily via the following steps:

  • Start the Windows XP Mode VM
  • Create a new folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer
  • Copy an InternetExplorer-link from your start menu to the newly created folder
  • Close the VM, maybe you will have to start and close it again to get the shortcut in the Windows 7 start menu.

Now you can start the “virtual” Internet Explorer 6 directly from the Windows 7 start menu.

Thanks to Daniel Melanchthon from Windows 7 Blog.

Convert websites to PDF

March 7th, 2008 No comments

I just stumbled upon a very useful website:

www.html2pdf.co.uk

Just insert a URL or some HTML code and it generates a PDF file for you. Your website is copied pixel by pixel, and even links and flash videos are included.

Make the most out of your USB pen drive

February 15th, 2008 No comments

pstartNow I’m going to show you how I use portable programes like thunderbird or firefox on my usb pen drive. Of course everythin is safely encrypted.

The method I’m going to show you uses Truecrypt and Pstart. Administrator priviliges are required, unless the correct version of Truecrypt is already installed on the guest computer. Alternatively you could use special U3 pen drives, their encryption doesn’t require administrator priviliges.

How to print protected PDF files

February 15th, 2008 No comments

adobe_pdfThere are PDF files that you may read, but not print, e.g if you forget the password for the file. I’m going to show you how to bypass this protection and print the file anyway. If you find a protected file on the internet, you have to respect copyright laws and check carefully whether you are permitted to bypass the protection.

You’ll need two programs:

  • Ghostscript
  • GSView

I will not post the download links here for legal reasons. Google for the names, they are easy to find. You have to install the two programs in the given order.

Then you open “Start -> All Programs -> Ghostgum -> GSView”. Now you can open and print the protected PDF file.

You can also save an unprotected version of the file for further processing. For that, in GSView click “File -> Convert -> OK” and save it under a new name (new.pdf). This new file is now unprotected.

have fun!
